Kershaw Co., SC (WOLO) — Those bitter cold temperatures ABC Columbia’s Chief Meteorologist John Farley has been tracking for days is finally settling in here in the Midlands. While various Counties, and City leaders are opening warming shelters throughout the area, the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office is going a step further.
With temperatures expected to drop to the teens creating some dangerous conditions, officials say it’s especially concerning for the homeless population who deputies say “may not be able to survive” this blast of cold weather hitting the area. To keep those without a place to call home safe and warm, they are actively searching for anyone who is sleeping outside during the blistering cold snap.
In addition to searching pitched tents in wooded areas and beyond, deputies are also asking members of the public to report anyone they know or those they may have seen sleeping in the elements so they can help. According to the Sheriff’s Office, if they are given information about someone without shelter, or if they happen to find them during their ongoing searches officials say they will give them a ride to the shelter ‘Food for the Soul” located at 110 Dekalb Street in Camden, SC.
Authorities are also asking churches and businesses in the Camden area who may have room to house some of those without a place to stay to please contact them to help provide emergency shelter this weekend.
